Saturday October 23rd

The Big Truck Roundup at the Archibald Library. 11am Family Storytime fun followed by a special big truck petting zoo in the library’s parking lot. Learn about and see some awesome big trucks! No tickets required – families welcome!

Early Halloween fun at Family Storytime programs - 11am at the Archibald Library and 2pm and 3pm at the Paul A. Biane Library. Families are invited to celebrate this special time of year with spooktacular stories, ghoulish games and feverish fun! Costumes are encouraged! Walk-ins welcome!

Super Duper September

September was an exciting month with everyone back in school. The library offers many great programs that children and families can enjoy after school including Discovery Club, Pajama Storytime, and Family Saturday. Let us fill you in on a few of the great programs we had.

This past month Discovery Club let kids explore folklore and superstitions, celebrate “Comic Book Day”, and even learn how to be a storyteller. Join us next month for Mad Libs Poetry Slam and our Halloween program “Goodnight Goon”.

If you can’t find time during the week, every Saturday is Family Saturday and fun for the whole family. This past month we celebrated the “Marvelous Mo Willems” and even “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” Keep an eye out for our Annual Big Truck Round up at our Archibald Library and “Nightmare Before Christmas” at the Biane Library.

Superhero Saturday

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superhero Saturday!!! Superhero Saturday will be happening on August 28th at 2pm and 3pm at the Paul A Biane Library. The event will feature superhero-related storytimes, crafts, activities and the chance to meet some of your favorite costumed characters. No tickets are required for the event. Admittance will be on a first come, first served basis. So grab your favorite cape and we will see you there!

2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program – Make a Splash! Read!

The 2010 Summer Reading Program starts on June 10th and ends on July 24th. Kids are encouraged to read, explore their creativity and have fun at the library during the summer! Weekly prizes and special performances round out this 6 week program.

Summer Reading Program Kickoff - June 10th!
Sign ups begin at both libraries on June 10th. We’re kicking off our program with special musical guests - Heebie & Jeebie. They’ll “Keep our Planet Cool” at 1pm at the Archibald Library and 3pm at the Paul A. Biane library. Free tickets for the event will be available on June 3rd.

We have a great lineup of performers who will be at each library on the following Thursdays. Please contact the library for more information about free tickets to the following perfomances:

Coming to a library not so far, far away…STAR WARS DAY!

Calling all Jedis! Star Wars Day lands at the Paul A Biane Library on Saturday, May 29th from 1pm - 4pm.

The event is a family-themed celebration of the Star Wars universe that will include a costume contest, official Star Wars artists Randy Martinez and Denise Vasquez giving tips on how to draw your favorite Star wars characters, the art of Lawrence Noble (Star Wars Empire Strikes Back 10th anniversary poster artist) Star Wars related crafts, games, and storytimes, as well as a chance to mingle with some of your favorite Star Wars characters.

Be sure not to miss out on this immensely popular event. May the Force Be With You!

Little Read!

This year's Big Read program will be having the Little Read - children's programs featuring themes related to Mark Twain throughout April! The Big Read program encourages a community wide celebration of Mark Twain’s classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Big Read Kickoff on Saturday, April 10th

Join us from 2pm – 4:30pm at the Paul A. Biane Library for our Big Read Kickoff events. The Big Read kickoff is a fun, old fashioned, family Saturday for all ages. The kickoff event will include, an official ribbon-cutting by Mayor Don Kurth, M.D., entertainment, music, activities, crafts and games. Featuring storyteller Kurt Sutton as Mark Twain, Craig Newton’s “Historical Journey Through America’s Music,” the Guinness Book of World Records Tallest Cat, the Super Reader bookmobile, and more! No tickets are required.

“Music Born in America” by Sandii Castleberry at 4pm on Wednesday, April 14th at the Paul A. Biane Library (tickets available on April 7th) and Thursday, April 15th (tickets available on April 8th) at the Archibald Library. Free Tickets are required for this event.

Welcome to Play in the Library

How do you provide babies and young children with access to early learning, literacy, and library services? The Rancho Cucamonga Libraries have spent the past several years working on the answers and solutions.

Over the past few years, the libraries have received federally funded grants administered by the California State Library to research the learning needs of the youngest members of our community. It was through this research, including needs assessments, surveys, focus groups, and training, that the answer was discovered … play.

Play stimulates an infant’s brain to develop connections, promotes intellectual capacity, and develops the mind and body with skills for early literacy. Play is how babies and young children learn and is their source for information about the world.

The library can make a difference in children’s lives by offering opportunities for children to play and learn – building skills for learning and literacy through life. The Rancho Cucamonga Libraries are proud to welcome play and learning in the library.

Find a PAL at the Library

To build on this research, the RC libraries secured another grant to bring play and learning to the youngest members of our community. This grant allowed the library to build on the research to create specialized stations for infants, young children, and their families to play and learn.

These play stations, or Play and Learn Islands (PALS for short), have been designed to incorporate the critical types of educational play in a library space.

The community feedback from surveys, intercepts, and focus groups guided the inspiration for the themes of the four PALS that have been created:

“Discovery Dig”, “Make it Move”, “Big Build”, and “IlluminArt”.

Each PAL has a variety of hands-on activities encouraging different types of educational play allowing a range of ages to encourage the family to play and learn together. At these stations children will imagine, discover, create, and bring learning to life.

PALS will be spotted in the library, at library events, and we hope will visit local schools. Join us for their debut during National Library Week beginning April 11 and find a PAL at the library!

The Play and Learn Workshop

Family Place Libraries is a national movement that is helping to educate families and libraries on the importance of play in early childhood development and early literacy. Libraries are a place where everyone is welcome and the Family Place Initiative is helping libraries to become a space for the whole family.

The Rancho Cucamonga libraries are the proud recipient of a Family Place Library grant, the first of its kind in California, which will help the library implement the important foundations of early learning. Many of the important fundamentals are already in place at our libraries: a welcoming library space for all, programs and services for young children and families, a collection of resources for young children and parents.

The RC Libraries are proud to present the final piece of a family place library, a special workshop for parents and children. This parent & child program, The Play and Learn Workshop, will be offered in a series of sessions at the Paul A. Biane Library this April, with registration beginning March 24th at 10 am. The goal of this workshop is to bring the family together through play, with a focus on children ages 1 to 3.

The workshop allow parents a chance to meet one on one with child development professionals, meet other parents, pick up parenting tips, learn about child development and how play can help your child, and best of all, kids get to play.

Part of the Family Place model is that learning and play should expand beyond the workshop. The educational manipulatives used in these workshops will be available on the public floor for families to play and learn during their library visits. We hope you’ll visit us to play and learn!

February is a month for fun, learning and family togetherness at the library!

This month we have a number of activites geared for children of all ages. Come join us for some crafts, games and reading at the library. All of these events including registration for the upcoming storytime sessions makes for a busy month at your library. Check out the upcoming events below.

Storytime Registrations

Registrations begin at 10am:

Bouncing Baby Storytime - Registration on Thursday, 18th for the Archibald Library session and Monday, February 8th for the Biane Library session (library will be closed on the 15th in observance of President's Day.)

Toddler Time – Registration on the Thursday,18th for the Archibald Library session, and Friday, February 19th for the Biane Library session.

Preschool Storytime - Registration on Tuesday, 16th for the Biane Library session and Wednesday, 17th for Archibald Library session.

Biane Library Family Storytime – Friday, February 19th at the Biane Library.

Cupid’s Workshop open to the Public! (ages 2-11)
Come join us for Cupid’s workshop where children will hear stories and make crafts that are fun for both boys and girls. This event will be held in Celebration Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 10th @ 4pm and again at the Archibald Library on Thursday, Feb. 11th (4pm). Tickets for the Archibald event are available at the Archibald Children’s desk don’t miss out!

Tickets for the Biane event will be available on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd at the Biane Children’s desk.

If you can’t make it to either event we will be continuing the love on Saturday, Feb. 13th at our family storytimes located at both libraries – Archibald Library 11am and Biane Library 2pm and 3pm

Black History Month (ages 6-11)
Cultural Arts Night
Travel back in time and visit the Underground Railroad where children will learn about the hardships of traveling between the vast network of people who helped slaves make their way to freedom. Join us for a special night featuring artists, musicians and a special guest speaker.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! (ages 2-11)
Come hear one of our favorite children’s books Green Eggs and Ham and celebrate the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel famous cartoonists and children’s author. This year we are celebrating carnival style with games such as One fish, two fish, red fish, throw fish a Green eggs race and a Fox in Socks poetry jam.

This event will be at Celebration Hall (next to the Biane Library) on Wednesday, March 3rd @ 4pm and again at the Archibald Library on Thursday, March 4th in the children’s storytime theatre. Tickets are limited so be sure to hop on this opportunity!

January is Art Month at Discovery Club

Have you heard about the amazing activities happening at the after school Discovery Club? Why not come and check it out! Discovery Club is for kids ages 6-11, and it meets Wednesdays at 4:00 pm at the Paul A. Biane Library, and Thursdays at 4:00 pm at the Archibald Library.

January is art month, and kids ages 6-11 will be exploring various art techniques throughout the month. Projects will be displayed at the Archibald library during the month of January. There is no registration required for the regular weekly programs – just drop in when you can!

Also, on Wednesday, January 27th at the Biane Library and Thursday, January 28th at the Archibald Library, kids attending Discovery Club will have the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year and learn about Chinese culture. Activities will include playing games, listening to stories, learning dances, and creating the scales for awesome paper dragons that will be used to decorate the children’s areas of both libraries. Because this is a special program, tickets will be required. The tickets are free and will be available beginning Wednesday, January 20th at the Biane information desk, and beginning Thursday, January 21st at the Archibald children's information desk. Holiday Happenings!

The winter season is here and the Rancho Cucamonga libraries have some special children’s and family programs lined up for the season.

On Saturday December 19th the Paul A Biane library will be celebrating Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang with “A Charlie Brown Holiday celebration” at 2 and 3pm. The program will feature Peanuts related games, crafts and readings of some classic winter-themed Charlie Brown strips. This program is aimed at ages 2-12.

The December 19th family Saturday at Archibald will be at 11am and will feature creative and festive holiday crafts for children 2-8 years old. Join us for holiday stories and make a glittering pinecone craft! Walk ins are welcome!

The following Saturday, December 26th, the Family Saturday program at both libraries will feature “great games”. The Great Games program will include both video games and traditional board games for the entire family. Whether you’re a Chutes and Ladders fan or a Wii enthusiast there will be a game for everyone. Be sure to bring your best game-face. Great Games at Archibald will be at 11am for children 2-8 and the program at Paul A Biane library will at 2 and 3pm for children between 2-12 year olds.

Walk-ins are welcome at both libraries for all family Saturday programs.

Both libraries will end the year on a wintery note by offering a make and take snowflake craft for kids 2-8 on Tuesday December 29th from 2-4pm.

Discovery Club Starts Today!

School is back in session for most Rancho Cucamonga children, so that means it’s time for afterschool storytimes. We have a new program called Discovery Club, which is a hands-on enrichment program that meets once a week at 4:00 pm. At the Biane Library, Discovery Club meets on Wednesday afternoons, and at the Archibald Library, it meets on Thursdays. This is a program for kids ages 6-12, and no prior registration is necessary. Parents are asked to wait in the library while their children enjoy the program.

Rod Gilfrey, Circus Acts and School Choirs...Oh My!

The Rancho Cucamonga Library's 2009 Telethon is just around the corner. Since our first telethon in 2000, it's grown into a three day entertainment extravaganza featuring the best in local entertainment including school choirs, the Redlands Y Circus (an actual circus) and world renowned opera singer, Rod Gilfry.

The RC Library Telethon offers you the opportunity to help support the incredible programs, events and services you enjoy.This year, funds raised from the telethon will go to support:

our ever-popular storytimes
programs like our Cultural Arts Nights and festivals
technology classes
new Children's Books

Remember the Past...Shape the Future

2009 is a year for “REMEMBERING THE PAST...SHAPING THE FUTURE at the Paul A Biane Library at Victoria Gardens. It’s also a year to CELEBRATE! Please join the Rancho Cucamonga Library for our 3rd Black History Month Cultural Arts Night on Friday, February 20th from 7pm to 9pm. Remember Motown? Come dance the night away to live music as members of the 6 piece band “Breakout” perform classic Motown hits.

Feel the Beat! Guests of all ages are invited to join percussionist Chazz Ross and his audience participation drum circle.

Make Music. Learn how to make your own Likembe (African thumb piano). Musician/craftsman Len Byrd will demonstrate the art of making a thumb piano and then will show us how it is played.

Meet the Artist. Enjoy an exhibition of works by celebrated local artist Demar Douglas. Mr. Douglas will be in attendance creating a new piece of art work inspired by the evenings’ events.

Chinese New Year activities

Join us Friday, Janurary 23rd from 7pm -9pm at the Paul A. Biane Library for our first annual Chinese New Year celebration. The celebration of the Chinese New Year will feature dancing, musicians, crafts for children and refreshments. Free tickets for this event will be available at our libraries starting on January 12. Make Chinese Dragons

Using brightly colored paper, pens, glue and lots of imagination, you can help us create beautiful dragons! Afterschool Cool storytimes on January 14th at the Biane Library and January 15th at the Archibald Library will be dedicated to making Chinese Dragons. Afterschool Cool storytimes are on Wednesday afternoons at Biane and Thursday afternoons at Archibald at 4pm for kids ages 6 - 11. No registration is necessary, but space is limited. Top Five Things You Can Do at the Library During the Holiday Break

It's that time of year again. You love having everyone at home and together during the holidays, but soon enough you hear the deadly, "I'm bored!" whine from your most well behaved child. So what's a parent to do?

1. Sit in on a storytime!

The Biane Library will continue to offer Family Saturdays, our unique, active storytime for the whole family during the holidays. Join us for the ever popular, Games Day, on December 27 or make a calendar for the new year on January 3.

2. Make a Craft!

Both the Archibald and Biane Libraries will be offering make and take crafts during the break. Archibald will have theirs available December 30 and Biane throughout the break.

3. Check out our Virtual Library!

This is a nice alternative if the weather outside proves to be frightful. Log in from the comfort of your home and browse the Library's vast digital collections. There is a wealth of information you can use through our more than 30 online databases.

4. Have you seen the adult collection lately?

For those of you with small children, you may be interested to know the Library has an extensive collection of materials for adults. :-) Come browse our vast selection of popular fiction and non-fiction, audio books and feature films on DVD.

5. Read a story to your child

The literacy experts say nothing is more valuable or makes a more lasting impression than reading to your children. The Library offers an outstanding selection of books for you to share with even the pickiest little one. Time Travel @ the Archibald library and Recycling @ the Biane library

More special weekend programs are planned for both libraries this Saturday, November 15.

At the Biane Library, the theme for the 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Family Storytimes is "America Recycles." Anyone who brings in 10 plastic bags between 1 to 5 PM will receive a reusable bag. In the Story Theater participants will share a book about recycling, see a PowerPoint Trivia Presentation, and discuss various ways to recycle! In the non-fiction area of the library children will create their own bugs using recycled egg carton cups. Recycler Coyote will be making an appearance for anyone who would like to take a picture with him.

And the monthly Time Travel series continues at the Archibald Library at 1:00 p.m. with a focus on Colonial America.

Also the following Saturday, November 22, please join us at the same times and at both libraries for a Native American Indian celebration.

Big Trucks @ the Archibald library and Bugs @ the Biane library!

This Saturday, October 25th, there will be special children's events at both the Archibald and Biane libraries:

The Archibald library will be hosting a Big Truck Storytime beginning at 11:00 a.m. The event will begin in the story theater and then move out to the north parking lot to see a police car, fire truck, trash truck, and, of course, the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library bookmobile.

Also, at 2:00 and again at 3:00, the Biane library will host a James and the Giant Peach party, with special guests from the UCR Entomology Department. There will be a hands-on insect program, crafts, and other activities.

Programs Aplenty@ The Rancho Cucamonga Library

Case in point: Visitors to the newly remodeled Archibald Library were treated to a display of crazy balloon antics courtesy of Buster Balloon during the Welcome Back, Archibald celebration Wednesday, October 8. With over 100 in attendance, Buster delighted the crowd with his patented escape from a straightjacket, twisted some amazing balloon art and of course, no presentation would be complete without the dreaded Whoppee Cushion of Doom!

On Saturday, October 11, the Biane Library featured Avian Entertainment in a salute to National Raptor Month. Parents and children were thrilled to see these amazing animals and learn all about them. And as you can see from the picture, this bird still knows the library is the place to find a good book!

The Little Read Movie Showings!

Families are friends are invited to watch a free showing of Harriet the Spy on Saturday, October 11th at 2pm at the Archibald Library, or Saturday, October 18th at 2pm at the Paul A. Biane Library. If you enjoy the movie please check out the book by Louise Fitzhugh's - Harriet the Spy. Eleven-year-old Harriet keeps notes on her classmates and neighbors in a secret notebook, but when some of the students read the notebook, they seek revenge. October is almost here bringing “Mystery Month” to the Rancho Cucamonga Libraries. Mysterious happenings at Afterschool Cool will get underway this Wednesday at the Paul A. Biane Library and Thursday at the Archibald Library both starting at 4:00 p.m. School-aged children will help initiate a month of mysteries leading up to spookiness in the approach to Halloween.

Featured among the mysteries in the Library’s collection are books by Bruce Hale. Mr. Hale will be visiting both libraries on Thursday October 23 and one lucky school on Friday October 24. Hispanic Heritage Festival Coming Sept. 5th
The Biane library will host another great after-hours event from 7-9 pm this Friday, Sept. 5: the Hispanic Heritage Festival. This is an event for the whole family, with crafts, games, music, and performers. Free tickets are available at the Information Desk.

Archibald Grand Re-Opening on September 13.
Also, please make plans to attend the grand re-opening of the Archibald library on Saturday, September 13th. The library will open at 10 am, and the Children's Department will offer storytimes by Ina Buckner-Barnette between 10:30 - noon. Also, musician Dan Crow will perform from 12:30 - 2 pm. Tickets for these free events will be available at the Archibald Children's Desk on the day of the event. Hope to see you there!

Fall Storytime Sessions Begin This Week
Fall storytime sessions for both the Biane and Archibald libraries begin this week (exception: Bouncing Babies begins next week). Archibald storytime groups will meet at the Biane library this week and next week. Beginning the week of Sept. 15th, Archibald storytimes will be held in the newly remodeled storyroom at the Archibald library.

Here is a schedule for this 8-week session:

Biane Storytimes:

Mondays -- Bouncing Babies (10 am and 11 am) will begin next week, on Monday, Sept. 8, because the library was closed for the Labor Day holiday. Registration for the next session will begin Monday, October 20.

Tuesdays -- Preschool Storytime (10 am and 11 am) begins today, Sept. 2. Registration for the next session will begin Tuesday, October 21.

Tuesdays -- Pajama Storytime (6:30 pm and 7:15 pm) resumes this week. Registration is not required.

Super readers!

On Thursday, Saturday the 14th, the library was happy to host a fantastic Summer Reading Club Finale to for all the kids who successfully completed the Summer Reading Program. In Celebration Hall, funny man Abbit the Average and juggler, David Cousin entertained children and parents with fantastic juggling and humor. Rafael and Katia were adventurous Pirate Magicians in the Lewis Family Playhouse. Staff from the library and Cultural Center worked together, along with some fantastic volunteers to make this finale a great event.

We appreciated the efforts from the kids and their families to make this year’s Catch the Reading Bug program one with record breaking sign-ups and attendance! We hope that everyone will join us again for next year’s Summer Reading Program - Get Creative @ Your Library!

Summer Reading Club Is Winding Down

The 2008 Summer Reading Club has been a great success so far this year, with 2,440 children and teens participating. The last day to sign up for the program was July 25. Now we are headed into the last two weeks, and the last day to turn in completed logs will be August 9.

Today we held a raffle, which was a bonus prize for those kids who finished their week 4 reports by July 25th. Winners were notified by phone this morning. Prizes included tickets to a Dodgers baseball game, a bug sticker book, and some really cool butterfly sunglasses. Congratulations to all the raffle winners!

This summer has been a busy one at the Biane Library, especially on Thursday afternoons, when our performers have been here to entertain us in Celebration Hall. Many of these programs have had over 400 people in attendance, and we still have two Thursday performances to look forward to: Wildlife Company on July 31st and Music and Fun with Craig Newton on Aug. 7th.

This summer, we also offer our regular weekly storytimes. Remember that Pajama Storytime is Tuesday evenings at 6:30 and again at 7:15, and Family Saturdays story hours are every Saturday at 2:00 and again at 3:00. Both are offered on a walk-in basis, so please join us for these great programs whenever you can. Next Saturday, Aug. 2nd, the theme for the Family Saturdays story hour will be "The History of Flight."

The Archibald Library construction is proceeding as planned. If you would like to see pictures of the progress, you can visit the Archibald Remodel blog. Join us for a creepy crawly festival of bugs brought to you by the Wildlife Company! Free tickets are still available for the Wildlife Company who will be at Celebration Hall on Thursday,July 31st for our library’s Summer Reading Program. You will get an up close and personal introduction to a wide variety of bugs from all around the world. Shows are at 1pm and 3pm.

Swazzle Is Coming!
Make way for the puppets, because the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library will be hosting Swazzle at Celebration Hall this Thursday, July 10, at 1:00 and 3:00. This is a great event for kids and their parents. Many people have already picked up their free tickets, but those without tickets will be admitted if there is space available.

Making puppets is a great summer activity for kids. You can even put on your own puppet shows when you have finished. If you would like to learn more about puppets and puppetry, here are some books the library has available that can get you started:

Rancho Cucamonga Catches the Reading Bug!
With almost 500 attending the Summer Reading Program Kickoff, Rancho Cucamonga has definitely caught the reading bug! After enjoying a great show featuring Buster Balloon parents and children streamed into the Children's Room at the Paul A. Biane Library at Victoria Gardens eager to sign up for the Summer Reading Club. If you haven't done that yet, don't panic, there's still time. Not at the Biane Library? Summer is Here!

The 2008 Summer Reading Program will begin this Saturday, June 21st with a kick-off event at the Paul A. Biane Library. Buster Balloon will be performing at 1:00 and again at 2:30. Free tickets to these performances are available at the Biane Library Information Desk, but hurry because they are going fast!

If you need some summer reading suggestions, how about reading some of the great books that have won the Newbery Medal? Archibald Library’s remodel is right around the corner! Archibald Library will be closed for the remodel starting on Saturday, June 14th. Since the Archibald location will be closed for the summer, we will have Archibald's summer storytimes at the Paul A. Biane Library.

Rancho Cucamonga Libraries Are Getting a Few Temporary Homes...

With the impending remodel and temporary closure of the Archibald Library this summer, no one need fear being too far from the Rancho Cucamonga Libraries you've come to know and love. Temporary library sites have been set up close to Archibald and the Biane Library will temporarly expand it's hours so no matter where you are, there will be a library near you.

The Paul A. Biane Library at Victoria Gardens will open Sundays from 1-5pm during the summer beginning June 15.

The Family Library at Central Elementary School offers

browsing collection of popular materials for adults

great selection of materials for children and teens

You can participate in the Summer Reading Club

Library staff will also be on hand to assist you

The Family Library will open June 23, with service from 10-5 Monday through Friday.

The Rancho Cucamonga Senior Center at Central Park offers a self-service, browesable collection of materials primarily for adults.

And, of course, you'll find our Bookmobile at various locations throughout Rancho Cucamonga all summer long.

Free tickets will be available starting Saturday, May 17 for the upcoming Star Wars Day on Saturday, May 24 at the Biane Library. Kids ages 2-12 and their parents will be able to:

Enjoy Star Wars themed storytimes,

Create light saber balloons or R2D2 masks,

Visit with Star Wars characters such as Darth Vader, the Emperor, and Storm Troopers, and

Watch a light saber demonstration in the Imagination Courtyard.

Also, teens will have the opportunity to participate in a Star Wars Trivia Tournament, and there will be a costume contest for the younger kids.

Community Helper's Day

Did you know that firefighters use dogs to help them find out how fires start? It’s true! Dogs have a great sense of smell, and can be trained to sniff out things that help firefighters investigate how fires are started. This Saturday, May 17 at the Paul A. Biane Library at Victoria Gardens we will have a special guest—Susan De Antonio and her special helper, fire dog Denali. Susan and Denali will be here at from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. to tell us all about their interesting job and how they help our firefighters. They will also be reading stories about other people who help out in the community. It’s sure be a “doggone” good time!

It's Finally Here! The BFG Takes Over the Cultural Center!

After months of planning and preparation, we have made a special place at the Paul A. Biane Library for the BFG! We're inviting all of Rancho Cucamonga to celebrate this most wonderous of giants with our Big Friendly Festival. April 12: Big Friendly Festival
The Cultural Center will be overrun with giants to celebrate the opening of Roald Dahl's, BFG, at the Lewis Family Playhouse and kickoff National Library Week. Balloon twister extraordinaire, Buster Balloon and juggler, David Cousin will perform. There will also be crafts, games and activities for the whole family.

Storytime Registration Week Starts Monday!

If you have a child between 0-12 years of age, we've got a storytime for you! Between our two library locations, we offer 15 storytimes per week. If you would like your child to attend some of our most popular storytimes, Bouncing Babies, Preschool and Toddler Time, you can register at the library of your choice. Once you register, your child will be able to attend the following 6-7 week session. Check our calendar for days and times at each location.

Of course, we also offer several "Family Storytimes" at both the Archibald and Biane Libraries. "Family Storytimes" are drop in and suitable for the whole family to participate.

If you're looking for something for your older school age child, check out Afterschool Cool. Held on Wednesdays at Biane and Thursdays at Archibald, this fun, informational program offers children ages 6-11 a chance to experience life as a passenger on the Titanic, help rescue slaves on the Underground Railroad and participate in an amazing array of art projects.

So whether you have a newborn, toddler, elementary school student or would just like to hear a story yourself, we invite you to join in a storytime near you!

Tickets are still available for our second Black History Month Cultural Arts Night!

In celebration of Black History Month, the Paul A. Biane Library and Rancho Cucamonga Library Services will host our second Black History Month Cultural Arts Night on February 22, 2008, from 7-9pm. The event will be held at the Paul A. Biane Library at Victoria Gardens, 12505 Cultural Center Drive, Rancho Cucamonga. Building on the success of last year’s event, this year’s program will celebrate music and culture with something for everyone featuring performances by storyteller and music historian, Makinto, the Los Osos Jazz Band, guest speakers, multimedia displays and a variety of children’s, teen and family activities.

Babies are synonymous with beginnings and fresh starts so what better way to usher in the new year than by starting a new storytime just for babies?! Beginning January 14 at the Paul A. Biane Library and January 17 at the Archibald Library, Bouncing Babies storytime will offer children ages 0-23 months and their caregivers an opportunity to enjoy songs, fingerplays, stories and quality time learning about language and play. So Just Where Have We Been?

While its customary to do a year in review posting closer to the end of the year, now, in the wake of our annual inservice, is a perfect time to recap some of the amazing things that have gone on at our amazing libraries in the past twelve months.

Between our three locations, Archibald, Biane and the Bookmobile, we have circulated almost 1 million items (sure to top that by January 1), welcomed almost 600,000 visitors and issued almost 20,000 new library cards!

As we look forward to the new year, we know we're only going to get bigger and better. We're going to begin work on revamping our "fourth" location -- the Virtual Library, enhancing and expanding our programming with the addition of a storytime for children under the age of two and increasing the number of special family programs offered at all of our locations.

We look forward to seeing all our library regulars as we welcome in this new year and making some new friends, as well! Please join us in making 2008 our best year ever!

The Big Read is Almost Over...

As we enjoy our final few book discussions and look forward to our culminating event, Thursday's visit by Mary "Scout" Badham, those of us at the library have been thinking about some of our favorite literary memories. Whether it was being tucked in while our parents read The Lord of the Rings trilogy or remembering the first time we finished a chapter book by ourselves, no one can deny the special place books and words have in our lives and the lives of our children. Beyond the lessons of acceptance and tolerance To Kill a Mockingbird teaches, reading one book as a community reminds us of the power of words, the value of shared experience and the importance of people coming together to reaffirm the importance of these ideals.

Parents: What Page Are You On?

That's right, we are kicking off our first ever book discussion for Preschool Storytime parents. Tuesday and Wednesday join library staff, parents and other adults for a spirited (but short) discussion of our Big Read book, To Kill A Mockingbird. The public has spoken, the ballots counted and the winner of our Pet Photo Contest is Prince. This pint-sized, cutie's picture was taken by Deidre Davison. For her winning entry, Ms. Davison won tickets for four to see Go, Dog, Go at the Lewis Family Playhouse. Second place went to Pipsqueak, a spotted tabby cat rescued from the pound. His picture was submited by Joshua Roney. And third place goes to the lovely Cha-Cha submitted by Kyle Tomoyo.

Storytime Registration Starts This Week

Registration for the next eight week session of Preschool storytime starts this Tuesday at the Biane Library at 10am and Wednesday, at our Archibald Library. Once registered, children are insured a spot at each weekly storytime. Rancho Cucamonga Library began registering children several years ago due to the high demand for storytimes specifically geared to Preschoolers and Toddlers. Preschool Storytime Parents Now's Your Chance to Read A Book for Grown-Ups!

Rancho Cucamonga's Big Read is bigger than ever and here's your chance to get with the program! Parents and Caregivers with children in the 10AM Preschool Storytime at both libraries can read Harper Lee's classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, and participate in a book discussion while your children are in storytime on October 30, at the Biane Library or October 31 at our Archibald Library.

This is a great way to enjoy the book and meet other preschool parents and caregivers. What an exciting kick-off to the new school year!
The Rancho Cucamonga Library welcomed the new school year by offering our first Family Saturday Program on Saturday September 15th! We celebrated with a Back to school storytime, pencil cup craft and a spelling bee. The highlight of the event was by far the Spelling Bee. We had ten contestants, five in the 6-8 year old group and five in the 9-11 year old group. The competition went so well, the 6-8 year olds were spelling word from the 9-11 years list! A good time was had by all and everyone walked away with a prize for their efforts and great spelling abilities!

We will have a variety of activities going on every Saturday at the Biane Library! We hope you will stop by and join us!

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

Unfortunately as another Summer comes to an end, we not only have to bid farewell to the Summer Reading program but to Sara Jump, our Children's Librarian at the Archibald Library. Sara has grudgingly left the blazing heat of sunny, Southern California for the blazing heat of Minnesota. While we were all shocked and saddened by Sara's need to relocate, we are really grateful for the short time we were able to share with her. Her enthusiasm for children's services and committment to the children of Rancho Cucamonga will be missed. However, Minnesota's sure lucky!

Abbit the Average? Scott Land Marionettes? 110 Degree Heat? Must Be Another Spectacular Finish to the Summer Reading Program

A fun time was had by all! All that is who finished the Summer Reading program. Whether enjoying the Dunk the Duck game or the comedy stylings of Abbit the Average, close to 1000 attended the three hour festivities on August 16. Congratulations to all who finished! The end of the Summer Reading Program seems to come more quickly every year. This year was an extra special one, though, as we welcomed more participants to the program than ever before, set attendence records for weekly programs at both libraries and also saw attendance at our ongoing library programming increase.

This year, August also brings to an end our first year at the Biane Library. It seems like just yesterday we were unpacking pallets of books in 100 degree heat, dodging workers as they raced to put the finishing touches on what would become our third amazing library location (fourth, if you count our bookmobile) and tried to corral the 3,000+ who attended the opening day festivities.

It truely been an amazing summer and an equally incredible year. I can only wonder what this "new year" may have in store!

We can't believe it's almost time, but the Summer Reading Program is almost over! Seems like just yesterday we were hanging question marks and children were checking out books by the armful (well, they still are) to fill in their reading log.

In the coming days, I'll be loading pictures from our summer programs to a flickr site, so we can all sit back, relax and recall the good old days...that were just a few days ago.

We’re heading into the home stretch…

If you’re one of the 1,000+ Rancho Cucamonga children who signed up for our Summer Reading Program, keep up the good work – you’re almost there. With just three weeks left in our Summer Reading Program, you are on your way to being a star summer reader and earning a great end-of-the-Summer surprise.

DON’T TELL ME HOW IT ENDS
This is my plea to all of you industrious Muggles out there who’ve already finished the final (?) installment of the Harry Potter saga. I’m hoping to get to Harry and company as soon as I finish the other four books I have on my summer reading list including the next selection of the Rancho Readers Bookclub, The Westing Game.

At least I didn’t have to miss out on the Harry Potter party we had at our Archibald Library on Friday. As you can see from the pictures, a great time was had by all. Each participant was treated to sampling of Hogwarts classes, Divination, Herbology, Transfiguration and, the ever-popular, Potions. In true Hogwart’s style, following our classes, we returned to the “main hall” for a lovely feast including a birthday cake for “Haree”. At 12:01am Saturday morning, the race was on to get a copy of the book and start reading. Fear not, however, copies of the book are still available to purchase at both libraries, or you can add your name to the wait list.

Harry Potter and the Halfway Mark
Ok, so that isn't the title for J.K. Rowlings latest and final installment in the Harry Potter series. But, it seems that's what
summer is all about...

Harry Potter
We'll be hosting a very special Harry Potter party on July 20th for children ages 10-16. Participants will get to experience a day in the life of a Hogwart's student: taking classes, being chased by dementors and having tortured conversations with Moaning Myrtle.

Aside from all that fun, we really are curious to find out what happens in the final installment of the series. I can't really see Harry dying, as some of the more pessimistic among us believe. But I don't think all of my favorites will be spared. Maybe the Dursley's will finally get what's coming to them...

CALLING ALL TEACHERS
Yesterday afternoon, teachers from around the southland gathered in the Lewis Family Playhouse to hear about the exciting 2007-2008 Theater for Young Audiences season. Featuring a great mix of shows for all grade levels, this upcoming season offers more opportunities to integrate theater arts in the classroom.

Beyond the outstanding curriculum guide (check it out -- its very cool), theater staff have forged a partnership with California State University San Bernardino's Master's in Theater Arts Education program. This partnership offers the opportunity for teachers and their students to have class visits by trained theater arts teachers! To find out how your class can participating in this unique and exciting opportunity, contact Murray Hepner in the Lewis Family Playhouse (909)477-2775 ext. 3734; murray.hepner@cityofrc.us.

Don't forget to book your shows early -- they do sell out fast! Also, since you're here, why not add a tour of the Paul A. Biane Library on to your visit? Tours last approximately 1/2 hour, are arranged around theater performance schedules and can include time to browse and check out library materials. We were so happy to see so many enthusiastic grizzlies this Thursday at the Biane library!

Telethon -- $100,000 and counting!
If you were one of the very few who didn't catch it when it aired live on Channel 3 or saw our inaugural webcast, last weekend we had our 7th Rancho Cucamonga Library Telethon!! For three days, we saw some of the best entertainment and brightest students Rancho Cucamonga has to offer -- all for free. We're still accepting donations, with all the money going to help buy books and materials for our library.
